Decodable Passage 1

Bright Dogs

Do you know a person that cannot see well? If you do, you might know a service dog, too. This is a dog that helps people with bad sight. A helping dog can do many things to help these people. He tries to see just what the person needs. A helping dog is a real friend to the sight impaired.

Sight dogs are very bright animals. A sight dog can help someone get around. The dog knows the right way to go. Just tie a tight harness on the dog, and he will lead you on the right path. The dog will stop if it is not safe to cross a street. Then he will go when it is safe.

If a person needs to get a box from a high shelf, a helping dog tries with all his might to reach it. If the dog hears even a slight sound at night, he will bark to tell his owner about it. A sight dog might even switch on a light—no lie!

A sight dog tries his best to please his owner. He wants to do the right thing all the time. And it does not take much to reward the dog. He might sit upright and put his paw on your thigh just to get a pat on the head or a small treat. Then he sighs with delight. He knows that he did just the right thing.
