Decodable Passage 6

Be a Volunteer

At times, do you wish you could make this planet a better home for everyone? If so, maybe you can be a volunteer and donate time to helping others.

If you can’t think of the kinds of things to do as a volunteer, look for projects near your home, such as at a school or a church. Ask your mom and dad to tell you when they hear of a project that you might like.

There are lots of things a kid can do as a volunteer. If you prefer being in nature, help clean up the shoreline of a lake, bay, or river, or volunteer in a wildlife shelter. Maybe you will help heal a sick bird or help a deer with a broken leg.

Perhaps you have a clear talent for music or art. If so, offer to help teach these skills to other kids. You can volunteer each year on Thanksgiving to prepare supper and cheer up the homeless.

Helping in any way is important. Don’t be afraid that you lack the skills to be a volunteer. Mentors will be grateful and glad to teach you the things you need to know. And be proud as a volunteer! Peers may sneer when you say that you work hard for no pay, but just tell them that the sheer joy of giving is enough payment.
