Decodable Passage 16

Design for Recovery

It was a snowstorm for the ages. Jami Goldman drove home from a skiing trip in the mountains, when she took a wrong turn. Hours later, she was stuck in a snowstorm for days. After many days, she and her friend were rescued, but then she got some bad news from the doctors. She lost both her legs to frostbite. They were amputated below both knees.

Being an amputee was not something Jami had ever thought about. She was only in her twenties, and her whole life loomed ahead. She knew she had to work hard. The first thing she did was go to college to get a degree. Then she started to race.

Like many amputees, Jami was fitted with artificial limbs. When she raced on a track, she used special legs called “Cheetahs.” They cost $3,000, but they gave her freedom to become what she wanted—an athlete and a competitor.

Not content to just run races, Jami wrote a book about her life called “Up and Running.” She tells about being stuck in the snowstorm and how she worked to make herself strong again. Her story inspires anyone who has ever had problems. Her life is a design for recovery.
