Character: Practice Together

Now read the rest of the story aloud with your class. As you read, listen for the ways the writer characterizes the clever woman. After you read, complete the activity and answer the question next to the passage.

Setting: How It Works

Setting is the time and place where the story happens.

  • • In most stories, the setting is one place and one time. In longer fiction, the story can take place in several places and time periods.

  • • Setting includes the way people live, think, and act at that time and place. It also includes their customs or traditions.

  • • The time and place affect how the characters think and act.

  • • Setting also affects the plot. For example, a story set at a time before space travel would not have people taking a spaceship to the moon.
