Predict
The princess is sent a strange riddle from a rich man. Who is it?
SCENE 4. The next day. The KING and QUEEN are in the garden.
QUEEN. The Princess cried all night long. We must think of something. If we had chosen a husband, all of this might have been avoided.
KING. I think you are right.
[A YAM VENDOR enters carrying a basket of yams.]
YAM VENDOR. Great King and Queen. I met a caravan along the road. A rich man paid me a lot of money to bring this riddle to the princess. I have no idea what it means, but I promised I would deliver it.
[The PRINCESS enters the garden.]
PRINCESS. I hear you have something for me. What is it?
YAM VENDOR. [recites] A yam tied to a tree will turn sugar into fire.
PRINCESS. [gasps] Father, I need two horses. My dearest love has been tied to a tree and left to be stung to death by fire ants. I must go rescue him! [to the YAM VENDOR] Show me the way back to where you were! [exits quickly with YAM VENDOR]
SCENE 5. A week later. A wedding is taking place in the court. The KING and QUEEN sit on the throne. The newly-married PRINCESS and SERVANT are seated together.
CHORUS. [enter dancing and singing]
The princess is here,
And happiness has come.
Her husband is here,
And happiness has come.
They are together,
And happiness is in this place.
