Make Comparisons

How are people alike? How are they different? You can find out by asking questions of two people.

Make a chart like the one below. Plan your own questions. Write each person’s answers in your chart.

QuestionPerson 1 AnswersPerson 2 Answers
When is your birthday?
How tall are you?
What color are your eyes?
What are your hobbies?
Who’s your favorite singer?
What’s your favorite food?

Share the answers you collect with your classmates. Use the information to make comparisons.

Use Verbs in the Present Tense

Use verbs in the present tense when you make comparisons between people, places, or things the way they are now. Be sure your subjects and verbs agree.

Add -sif the subject is he, she, it, or a singular noun:
Kim celebrates her birthday in May, but Tina celebrates hers in June.
Add -esif the verb ends in sh, ch, ss, s, x, or z:
Maria fishes for fun, but Rob fixes old bikes.
Do not add -s or -esif the subject is I, you, we, they, or a plural noun:
Max and Diana play guitar in the band. I am different because I play drums.
