Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) was best known for his use of folklore, legend, and magical elements in his writing. In 1978, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel, Shosha. Singer knew that writing wasn’t always easy. He famously said, “The wastebasket is the writer’s best friend.” Singer died in 1991.
