When we negotiate, we try to reach an agreement with each other. Listen to the story about why leaves change color. In the story, what do Snow and Tree negotiate?
Story: The Changing Trees
“Tall tree,” said Snow, “please let me sit on your branches. I will have a place to rest between sky and ground, and you will have a soft whiteness against your dark branches.”
“You may rest here, if you wish,” replied Tree.
“But I cannot reach your wooden branches,” cried Snow. “Your leaves are in the way.”
“So sit on top of them,” laughed the tree.
The snow kept falling on the leaves. The leaves got heavier and heavier. Soon, branches broke off the tree and fell to the ground. The tree did not like this. “You must stop falling on me!” he cried to Snow.
But Snow replied, “We had a deal. You said I could rest on you. We must find a way to make this right.”
Suddenly, Snow had an idea. “I suggest,” Snow said, “that you lose your leaves in winter. Then when I arrive, I can rest on your strong branches!”
“But what about my beautiful green leaves?” cried Tree.
“I also suggest that before you lose your leaves, they change from green into beautiful colors that everyone will notice even more!” added Snow.
“That could work,” mumbled Tree, thinking how beautiful it would look with colorful leaves.
