Use Base Words Work with a partner. Cover up the suffix on each of these words from “A Lion Hunt.” Find the base word. Then analyze the meaning of the base word. Uncover the suffix and determine its meaning. Put the meanings of the word parts together to define the whole word.

Dread means fear and -ful means full of. So dreadful must mean full of fear or dread.

  • 1. darkness

  • 2. dangerous

  • 3. painful

  • 4. careful

  • 5. slowly

  • 6. freely

Write a sentence using each word. Trade sentences with a partner. Discuss how each suffix affects the meaning of the base word.

Listening/Speaking: Tell a Story
DRAMA

DRAMA

Imagine listening to Lekuton tell “the lion story.” He would probably tell some parts slowly and speak quietly. He would probably change the sound of his voice and make facial expressions to show fear, pride, or anger.

Tell a small group a story about an important, specific event in your life.

  • 1. Use a different rate and volume to tell different parts of your story. Slow down and speak quietly to build suspense or show certain emotions, such as sadness. Speed up and speak more loudly to show excitement.

  • 2. Use the sound of your voice to keep the listeners interested. For example, change your voice to show someone else’s dialogue.

  • 3. Use gestures and facial expressions that match your story.

After you tell your story, ask your audience which parts they liked the best and why. Was it what your story was about or how you told it?
