Just Ok

I read a thing about lions. A boy went on a hunt to a place with some people. The boy wanted to prove something. Then the lion killed some cows. The boy ran away. He was sorry and tried to prove his bravery later.

These nouns are not specific. The reader thinks: “What ‘thing’ did the writer read? Where was the hunt?”

Better

I read a story about lions. A teenager went on a hunt in Kenya with his brother and an elder from his village. The teenager wanted to prove his bravery. Then the lion killed his mother’s favorite cows. The teenager ran away. He was sorry and tried to prove his bravery later.

The writer used specific nouns. The reader will have a better picture.

Remember

  • • To make most nouns plural, add -s.

  • • If the noun ends in s, z, sh, ch, or x, add -es.

  • • If the noun ends in y after a consonant, change the y to i. Then add -es.

  • • Some nouns have special forms.
