Language and Grammar: Define and Explain

Pair Share With a partner, choose one animal from the story. Work together to talk about and explain the special features of this animal. Use correct subject pronouns.

The armadillo has an armored shell. The armor is made of bony plates.

The bony plates protect the armadillo. They also keep predators from eating the armadillo.

Writing and Grammar: Write About an Animal

Study the Models The first time you name your animal, use a noun. After that, use a subject pronoun to talk about the same thing. Don’t keep repeating the same noun. This will keep your reader’s interest because you will have smooth sentences.

Add Sentences Think of two more sentences to add to the BETTER model above. Be sure to use correct subject pronouns.
