A short story is a brief, made-up narrative. Every story has a plot, setting, and characters.
The setting is the time and place of the story. Sometimes, the setting can tell you what the characters will be like. For example, when you read that a story’s setting is in a kingdom, you can expect to see certain kinds of characters, such as a king and queen.
As you read, if you see words you don’t know, look for clues to help you figure out the meanings. Use the text around the word, the word itself, and sources outside of the text.
