A word has individual parts. For example, a suffix is a word part added at the end of a base word. When you add a suffix to a base word, you create a new word. For example:

  • develop is a verb that means “to grow.”

  • • The suffix -ment means “instance or action.”

  • • When you add -ment to develop, the new word development becomes a noun.

  • • What do you think development means?

The base word is develop, which means “to grow.” So development must mean “the action of growing.”

Figure Out Word Meanings Work with a partner to identify the individual word parts. Cover the suffix and look at the base word. Then uncover the suffix. How does the suffix affect the base word? Write the meaning of the whole word.

  • 1. movement

  • 2. segregation

  • 3. collectors

  • 4. greatness

  • 5. deeply

  • 6. heroic
