Eve set out to change the way people thought of her school.
She and other student leaders gave presentations at nearby middle schools, promoting Arlington. Eve also wrote editorials about Arlington High, which were published in The St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Hmong Times. “I wanted to share my pride, and I wanted to share what I love about Arlington High School,” Eve says.
Eve also worked to improve the school. She recruited a group of student leaders. Together, they formed an organization called VOICE (Voicing Our Intelligence to Challenge Education). They started an annual carnival to promote the rich mix of cultures at the school. Eve thinks that cultural diversity is one of the best things about Arlington. Thirty-three different languages are spoken there!
Eve’s efforts sparked change. In the past two years, positive articles on Arlington High School have appeared in the local media. Teachers and staff have started programs that have improved students’ academic scores. More freshmen say they are excited to go to Arlington.
