Use Adjectives That Describe

You can describe people, places, or things with adjectives. They answer the question: What is the person, place, or thing like?

EXAMPLESThe blue whale makes deep sounds.

Adjectives help the reader imagine people, places, or things.

Use adjectives to describe:Examples

how something feels, tastes, or smellsbitter, cold, salty, slimy, smooth

Often the adjective comes before the noun you are describing.

EXAMPLESThis large mammal is a fast swimmer.

If your verb is a form of be, you can put the adjective after the verb. The forms of be are am, is, are, was, and were.

EXAMPLESThe bats’ cave is dark. Attacks on humans are rare.
