You can describe people, places, or things with adjectives. They answer the question: What is the person, place, or thing like?
EXAMPLES | The blue whale makes deep sounds. |
Adjectives help the reader imagine people, places, or things.
Use adjectives to describe: | Examples |
---|---|
how something looks | beautiful, huge, long, red, tiny |
how something sounds | deep, loud, quiet, rumbling, squeaky |
how something feels, tastes, or smells | bitter, cold, salty, slimy, smooth |
a person’s mood | angry, fearful, helpful, kind, timid |
how many | many, plentiful, rare, ten |
Often the adjective comes before the noun you are describing.
EXAMPLES | This large mammal is a fast swimmer. |
If your verb is a form of be, you can put the adjective after the verb. The forms of be are am, is, are, was, and were.
EXAMPLES | The bats’ cave is dark. Attacks on humans are rare. |
