In “A Natural Balance,” you learned about problems that cause the extinction of plants and animals. Review the sidebar on page 338. Each of the “HIPPO” problems has a negative effect on plants and animals.
1 Study Causes What causes each of the five HIPPO problems? Work with a group to study and discuss the causes of each problem. For example: The problem of habitat loss is caused by trees being cut down and land being torn up.
2 Think of Solutions Choose one of the HIPPO problems. Discuss possible solutions with your group. Sometimes the cause or effect of the problem can help you think of solutions. Be sure to:
• Identify the problem.
• Explain why it is a problem.
• Tell what causes it.
• Suggest ideas that can help solve the problem.
3 Prepare a Presentation As a group, plan a problem-solution presentation to share with your class. Use an outline like this to help organize your ideas:
4 Give Your Presentation Share your presentation with the class. Then participate in a class discussion about your group’s ideas. How well will the solutions work? Give reasons for your opinions.
