In December of 1941, enemy aircraft attacked the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack struck the American people like a thunderbolt. War had been going on in Europe and in Asia for more than two years, but the United States had stayed out.
Many Americans thought war could never reach them. It was a distant buzz, troublesome but far away. That way of thinking soon ended.
Protected by oceans on either side, few Americans imagined the country being attacked. The events of Pearl Harbor woke up the nation.
At first angry, then with determination like steel, America went to work. Millions joined the Army. Factories produced war supplies around the clock. Everyone did what he or she could. A spirit of purpose gripped the nation.
