Unit 6 Wrap-Up

Conflict and Resolution

GUIDING QUESTION How can people overcome conflict?

Reflect on Your Reading

Think back on your reading of the unit selections. Discuss what you did to understand what you read.

Focus on Genre: Author’s Purpose and Word Choice

In this unit, you learned that authors use word choice to support their purpose for writing. Choose a selection from the unit. Then, list words and phrases that show why the author wrote that selection. Trade lists with a partner, and explain how each word choice supports the author’s purpose.

Reading Strategy: Make Inferences

As you read the selections, you made inferences based on the text and your own experiences. Explain to a partner how you will use this strategy in the future.

Explore the Guiding Question

Throughout this unit, you have considered how people overcome conflict. Choose one of these ways to explore the Guiding Question:

  • Discuss With a group, discuss the Guiding Question. Use quotations, dialogue, photographs, and events from the selections to support your answer.

  • Write Imagine that one of the characters or people in the selections wrote you a letter about his or her conflict. Write a letter back to offer advice.

  • Reflect Think about a conflict that people often face in real life. With a partner, brainstorm the best ways to overcome the conflict.
