Picture Prompt: Summary
Washington as Statesman at the Constitutional Convention, 1856, Junius Brutus Stearns. Oil on canvas, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia.
Benjamin Franklin wanted to persuade delegates at the Convention to sign the completed Constitution. Even though Franklin didn’t agree with everything in the document, he believed that having a central government for the United States was necessary. He felt that the Constitution they wrote was as good as possible.
He urged the delegates to talk positively about the Constitution when they presented it to the voters in their states. He also urged those delegates who were unsure about the document to support it for the good of the country.
