Would it be fun to run a restaurant? NO!

Running a restaurant is no fun.

Do you want to feel stress and pressure every day at your job? Of course not! If you don’t want a stressful job, you probably should not work in a restaurant.

Running a restaurant can be a very tiring job because it is so much work. My cousin, Steve, is the manager of a large restaurant. Steve often has to work up to fourteen hours per day! A recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle supports Steve’s experience by stating that, “restaurants are among the most labor-intensive of businesses.” Furthermore, having this much responsibility at work means you don’t have much free time to do the other things you like to do.

Another problem with running a restaurant is the possibility of losing your job. Everyone knows that the restaurant business is very risky. According to a study by Cornell University and Michigan State, a quarter of all new restaurants in the U.S. go out of business in the first year. That number rises to 50 percent after three years and 70 percent after ten years. That risk puts pressure and stress on workers who may have to worry about losing their jobs.

For all these reasons, I strongly believe that running a restaurant is not much fun. If you want to enjoy your free time, avoid stress, and have greater security, you may want to consider another job.
