ACT 3, SCENE 2 The camp in the forest. Now, though, there are piles of tanned skins and much meat hanging on the drying racks. Another wigwam, this one shaped like a dome and covered with blankets, has been built to stage left of the fire. LITTLE LISTENER, her brothers, and the Chenoo are all sitting together around the fire.

LITTLE LISTENER. Grandfather, you have helped my brothers with their hunting. We now have many skins for trade and have dried much meat to share with our people in the village. It is time for us to say goodbye. We must go back to our village now. Thank you for working so hard with us to provide for our village.

CHENOO. Granddaughter, I wish to come with you.

OLDEST BROTHER. Grandfather, you have been good to us and …

SECOND BROTHER. Grandfather, we have enjoyed being with you, but …

THIRD BROTHER. Grandfather, you will scare the other people in our village.

CHENOO. Grrrr, I fear you are right. I do not wish to frighten the people. Although I may not appear fearsome to you, my grandchildren, some people may be afraid of the way I look. Will you help me?

LITTLE LISTENER. Yes, grandfather. Tell me what we must do.

CHENOO. Make for me a sweat lodge and make it very hot.

[LITTLE LISTENER and her three brothers make a big sweat lodge.]

[When it is ready, the Chenoo goes inside by himself and closes the door of the lodge. The three brothers use forked branches to lift the heated stones from the fire and hand them in through the door of the lodge.]

CHENOO. Now pour the waterrrrr.

[LITTLE LISTENER hands him a big pot of water.]

CHENOO. Close the dooorrrr.

[They cover the opening with blankets. Some time passes.]

CHENOO. [from inside the lodge] Not hot enough.
