Reading Strategy

Follow these steps to read a word.

  • 1 Look for a pattern. The e makes the other vowel say a long vowel sound.

  • 2 Start at the beginning. Blend the sounds in your head. Then say the word.

The e at the end of a word has no sound. It tells me that the vowel sound is long.

Reading Practice

Use what you learned to read the sentences.

  • 1. My mother likes to make cakes.

  • 2. She says to use pure butter.

  • 3. She melts the butter on the stove.

  • 4. I taste the cake mix. Yum!

  • 5. It’s fun to bake a cake at home!

Spelling Practice

6.–9. Now write the sentences that your teacher reads.

Word Work

10.–21. Make a chart. Then read these words:

backcanmademad
hopheatcanerob
notehopenotbake
mapcakedotrope
10.13.16.19.
11.14.17.20.
12.15.18.21.

Write each word in the chart. Put it under the word that has the same vowel sound.
