Seth at Six
Seth ran up the path. Seth rang the bell. His mom and dad had told him to meet them at this house at six. Seth had to dash to get there at six. It was six on the dot when he rang the bell. Seth rang the bell again—RING, RING—but did not hear a thing. Then he sat on a bench in a patch of hot sun with his back to the door. A fat cat jumped up and sat on his lap. Seth sang a song as he sat in the hot sun with that cat.
Then a thin, fit man with a tan dog ran from a red house. This man sang a song as he ran, but it was a different song than Seth had sung. When the thin man and the tan dog ran by, the fat cat hid from the dog behind a shed.
Seth had turned back to catch the cat when he heard a thud, then a BONG, then a BAM, BONG, BONG! The thin man had whacked a trash can with a big lid as he ran. The lid went BING, BONG, BONG when it hit the ground. Then the man fell on the lid. Seth got up to help the thin man.
When the cat came back, Seth sat in the sun with the cat on his lap. It was now ten past six. Seth wished his mom and dad would show up.
