Remember, the subject of a sentence can be a pronoun.
• Use I when you talk about yourself.
• Use you to talk to one or more persons.
• Use we to talk about another person or persons and yourself.
• Use he, she, or it to talk about one person, place, or thing.
• Use they to talk about more than one person, place, or thing.
A subject pronoun can refer to a noun in another sentence.
• If the noun is a man or a boy, use he.
If it is a woman or a girl, use she.
Example | Dan is from Louisiana. He lost his house in a hurricane. |
Laila left her town. She came back after the hurricane. |
• If the noun is a place or a thing, use it.
If the noun is plural, use they.
Example | The house was flooded. It is a mess. |
My relatives lost their home. They are living with us. |
Say each pair of sentences. Replace the underlined subject with the correct subject pronoun.
1. The hurricane in 2005 was a big storm. The hurricane hit Cuba forcefully.
2. Winds pounded the island. Winds were very powerful.
3. Grandfather was in Cuba. Grandfather watched the storm.
4. Grandmother was in the United States. Grandmother felt worried.
Read each pair of sentences. Replace the underlined subject with the correct subject pronoun. Write it on a card. Hold up the card as you say the sentences with the pronoun.
5. Dave turns on the radio. Dave hears a weather report.
6. The storm is approaching. The storm is dangerous.
7. Waves hit the coast. Waves are huge.
8. Mom calls everyone. Mom gets the dog, too.
