Focus on Genre: Play

A play is a story that is written for actors to perform. Plays have dialogue, or the words the characters speak. Plays also have stage directions that tell the actors how to look and act.

Your Job as a Reader: Reading Strategy: Visualize

When you read a play, picture the scenes to bring them to life. Look for words in the dialogue and stage directions that describe the characters and events.

I picture Ms. Rosario looking excited, because she says, “Great!” Because of the word terrified, I picture Miss Petal looking afraid.
