A short story is a kind of narrative fiction. The actions of the characters make up the plot. A character who tells the story is the narrator.

Short stories often have a cause-and-effect structure. The reason for each action is a cause. What happens because of the action is an effect.

As you read, look for details that will help you identify main ideas. Record the details in your Main-Idea Chart. Use them to help you state main ideas.
