People do not always leave their country to find freedom. Sometimes they struggle for it at home. That happened in South Africa. About 20 years ago, South Africa had a system called apartheid, which means “separation.” Apartheid was a set of unfair laws. These laws took away freedoms from some people because of the color of their skin.
Nelson Mandela fought against apartheid. He was even jailed for speaking out, but he won! Apartheid laws were changed. Like many others, Mandela thought freedom was worth fighting for.
