Literary Analysis: Compare Myths

Myths are old stories that attempt to explain mysteries of the natural world, such as why rainbows appear or why zebras have stripes. All the myths in “The Earth Under Sky Bear’s Feet” tell about stars. Each myth explains why a group of stars forms a certain pattern.

People from different cultures created the myths, so each story is different. Look back at the selection to see which group of people told each myth.

Practice Together

Compare Myths Choose two of the myths. Use a Venn Diagram to compare them. In the middle section, write how the myths are alike. In the outside section, write how they are different.

Write About Myths Write a comparison-contrast paragraph about the two myths. Write sentences about how the myths are alike and how they are different. Use the Venn Diagram to help you organize information about the similarities and differences. At the end of the paragraph, include a few sentences that tell which myth you like the best, and why.

Compare Ideas Read your paragraph aloud. Listen to your classmates’ paragraphs to determine their ideas. Compare your ideas with theirs and discuss the differences.
