hunter

(hun-tur) n. A hunter is a person who looks for wild animals to capture or kill. A skilled hunter may use a bow and arrows to hunt.

hurricane

(hur-u-kān) n. A hurricane is an ocean storm with strong winds. From space, a hurricane looks like a spiral of white clouds.

identify

(ī-den-tu-fī) v. To identify means to find out or to show what something is. Some scientists try to identify how germs make people sick.

immigrant

(i-mu-grunt) n. An immigrant is a person who comes to live in a new country. Immigrants say a pledge, or promise, when they become citizens.

impressed

(im-prest) adj. If you are impressed, you are strongly affected by something. The audience was very impressed by the talented musicians.

instrument

(int-stru-munt) n. An instrument is something you play to make music. Guitars and violins are both stringed instruments.

interpret

(in-tur-prut) v. To interpret means to explain or tell what something means. Paul has to interpret the directions for me.

interview

(in-tur-vyū) n. In an interview, one person finds out about another person by asking questions. The reporter gathered information in the interview and then wrote the news article.

journal

(jur-nul) n. A journal is a record of someone’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Some people write in their journal almost every day.

law

(law) n. The law is a country’s rules. A police officer reminds people to follow the law.

layer

(-ur) n. A layer is a section that is on top of or under another. The cake has many layers, with frosting in between.

leader

(-dur) n. A leader is a person in charge of others. The leader of our hiking club decides which trail we will take.

learn

(lurn) v. To learn means to know about a subject by studying or practicing it. You can learn many things by reading.

leave

(lēv) v. When you leave a place, you go away from it. A bird leaves its nest to find food.

levee

(le-vē) n. A levee is a structure that keeps a river from flooding. If rainfall is heavy for a long time, a river could rise and the water could spill over the levee.

locate

(-kāt) v. To locate something is to find it. The woman tried to locate her missing purse.

lonely

(lōn-lē) adj. To be lonely means to be alone, without friends. Do you feel lonely when your friends are away?

loss

(laws) n. When you no longer have something important, you feel the loss. A terrible loss is the death of a loved one.

mascot

(mas-kot) n. A mascot is a character that represents an organization. The basketball team’s mascot cheers for the team.

mask

(mask) n. A mask is something a person wears to hide his or her face. The girl will wear a mask to a dress-up party.

material

(mu-tear-ē-ul) n. Materials are things you need to make a product or to do a project. Paint and brushes are materials you need for painting.

migrate

(-grāt) v. To migrate means to move from one place to another. Some birds migrate to a warm climate for the winter.

narrative

(nair-u-tiv) 1 adj. Narrative writing tells a story. 2 n. A narrative tells a story. My narrative about life in another country won first place in the narrative writing contest.
