Revise

When you revise a draft, you make your writing better. First you need to know what a reader thinks of your work. Nancy read her draft to a partner.

Nancy’s Draft

Cranberries and potatoes are grown in the same place. Carrots are grown in fields, too. Most cranberries are red. Potatoes are colorful. They are both grown in Washington.

Nancy’s partner says:

“You tell about where they’re grown in different places.”

“What colors are potatoes?”

“Why did you talk about carrots?”

Then Nancy knew she needed to make changes.

  • 1 DECIDE WHAT TO CHANGE

    Read your report to a partner. Ask your partner to restate information from your report. Do you need to make any changes to make your report more detailed or clearer?

  • 2 MARK YOUR CHANGES

    If you need to take out text, use this mark: illustration of proofreader's deletion mark—a line that loops once around.

    If you need to move text, use this mark: illustration of proofreader's move mark, a circle with an arrow.

    If you need to replace text, use this mark: illustration of caret insertion mark that looks like an upside down V.
