Diamante Poem

Poems use language to share thoughts, feelings, and memories. When you write poetry, choose each word carefully. Think about the sounds and beats of words.

• • Some poems rhyme. Rhyming words end with the same sound.

• • Sometimes other letter sounds are repeated in a poem. Alliteration is when the first sound in a poem repeats. Can you find the alliteration in line 2 of the diamante poem?

• • Words in poems have rhythm, just like the beats in music. Rhythm is the beat of the words in a poem.

Some poems have special rules for words, syllables, rhythm and rhyme. Diamante poems even have special rules for the shape of the writing! A diamante poem uses nouns, adjectives, and verbs to compare two different objects. Each line uses a certain type of word. It only has 9 words.

Line 1 Name the first object. Use a noun.

Line 2 Write 2 adjectives to describe the noun above.

Line 3 Write 3 verbs that end in -ing. The verbs must tell about both nouns.

Line 4 Write 2 adjectives to describe the noun below.

Line 5 Name the second object. Use a noun.
