Decodable Passage 3

Out of Harm’s Way

Karl loves to teach kids how to be safe. Karl went on a walk and thought about many things that could harm kids.

Inside their houses, kids can slip on wet floors. Sharp knives can cut a kid’s hand. Kids can trip on cords or rugs in the dark. Karl says, “Think smart to stay safe at home. Never run on wet floors. Switch on a bright light at night. Stay away from sharp knives and tools.”

Karl went to a park. Most kids like to play in parks and backyards. Karl tells kids how to stay safe in parks and yards. Karl says, “Don’t play with strange dogs. If a dog starts to bark, march away.”

Kids can be harmed in a park when they ride bikes or play sports. Karl says, “Pads should be worn when you ride bikes or play sports. A hard fall can harm you.” Sometimes, cars drive past fast. Karl says, “On the way to the park, listen for horns, and wait for the cars to pass. At the park, play far away from busy streets.”

Kids need to know how to be safe in a storm. Trees might drop sharp branches that can cut an arm. A bad cut will leave a mark or a scar. Karl says, “To stay safe, stay inside during a storm.”

Karl helps a lot of kids.
