Decodable Passage 4

Teens Who Serve

It is not true that guys and girls who are teens don’t care. No, sir! Just look around, and you will see teens that serve night and day, often for no pay.

First, a girl named Gert works as a clerk in a pet shelter. She is there day after day. Dirt on her skirt is okay with her. She loves cats and dogs. But, she loves bats, snakes, and birds that chirp, too. She believes they all deserve warm beds, fresh food to eat, and fresh water to stop their thirst. Her best T-shirt says, “I Support Animals!”

Then a boy named Kirk thinks about fir trees a lot. He even thinks of fir trees that grow in far-away parts of the world. He works hard to help preserve old fir forests. The shirt I will get him for his birthday will say, “Fir Trees First!”

Third, my sister helps a doctor for no pay. She squirts liquid cleaner day after day. No dirt is left behind after she gets through! Her motto is, “Get Stern with Dirt!”

And last, teams of teens work on trails in parks. They clean the trails where people hike all day. They sweep rocks off to the side. Their shirts may say, “Save Our Parks!”

Today’s teens deserve a lot of praise for their hard work. They serve us in so many ways. They make the world a better place. Let’s pay them with our praise. We should give teens like Gert, Kirk, and my sister a pat on the back.
