Soon Chester’s friends wanted earmuffs, too. So he started making earmuffs and selling them. He also applied for a patent. A patent is a document issued by the U.S. government that protects an inventor’s idea so nobody else can make money from it.
Chester began manufacturing earmuffs and eventually became rich. He became famous, too. Farmington, Maine, celebrates Chester Greenwood Day each December.

Chester Greenwood’s invention is still useful. Many other kinds of ear warmers came from his idea. Today, people even use a type of earmuff to block out all kinds of noise.
