Josh decided to design a special glove that would replace David’s lower right arm and hand. A device that replaces a missing body part is called a prosthesis.
Josh drew pictures of baseball gloves. Finally, he came up with a glove shaped like a scoop.
Josh first made a model of the glove out of paper. Next, he sewed a glove from leather. The glove fit onto the end of David’s right arm.
Josh hit a ball to David. David caught it in his left glove. Then he dumped the ball into the prosthetic glove and threw the ball into the air!
David started playing right field for the Spring Branch Mustangs. They won first place that season.
Josh’s invention drew so much attention that he and David were interviewed on Good Morning America and the Cable News Network. Stories about the glove appeared in newspapers across the United States. Josh received an award from the Easter Seal Society, an organization that helps people with disabilities. He and David even threw out the first pitch at a Houston Astros game.
Josh also received a prize from the Houston Inventors’ Association—a 291-piece tool kit. He can make plenty of things with that. But, Josh says, “The most important part was that the glove helped David. That’s why I invented it.”
