Use Adjectives That Describe

You can describe people, places, or things with adjectives. They answer the question: What is the person, place, or thing like?

EXAMPLEThe emperor lives in a huge palace.

Adjectives help the reader see the people, places, and things you are writing about. Use adjectives to describe:

  • • how something looks

EXAMPLEThe emperor sits on a golden throne.
  • • how someone sounds

EXAMPLEI hear a muffled gasp from the crowd.
  • • how something feels, tastes, or smells

EXAMPLEThe emperor wears a smooth, soft robe.
  • • someone’s mood

EXAMPLESThe energetic emperor walks through the crowd.
The excited girl bows in front of the emperor.

Adjectives often come before the nouns they describe. Sometimes they come after a form of the verb be.

EXAMPLEHe holds a golden fan. The fan is heavy.
