You can describe people, places, or things with adjectives. They answer the question: What is the person, place, or thing like?
EXAMPLE | The emperor lives in a huge palace. |
Adjectives help the reader see the people, places, and things you are writing about. Use adjectives to describe:
• how something looks
EXAMPLE | The emperor sits on a golden throne. |
• how someone sounds
EXAMPLE | I hear a muffled gasp from the crowd. |
• how something feels, tastes, or smells
EXAMPLE | The emperor wears a smooth, soft robe. |
• someone’s mood
EXAMPLES | The energetic emperor walks through the crowd. |
The excited girl bows in front of the emperor. |
Adjectives often come before the nouns they describe. Sometimes they come after a form of the verb be.
EXAMPLE | He holds a golden fan. The fan is heavy. |
