Sherry Garland (1948– ) was born in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. She is known for writing stories about people of different cultures. She became interested in Vietnam after meeting families who had moved to Texas to escape the Vietnam War. She has written more than twenty-five books. Seven have been inspired by the Vietnamese culture, including The Lotus Seed. Garland now lives in central Texas.
Tatsuro Kiuchi (1966– ) was born in Tokyo, Japan. The Lotus Seed was the first children’s book Kiuchi ever illustrated. Having never been to Vietnam, he researched the country through books and photographs. Since then, he has gone on to illustrate over a dozen books and win awards for his art. Today, Kiuchi lives in Tokyo, Japan.
