How Are Events Related? As you read, think about how some events are connected to other events in the text.
• The cause is the reason an event happens.
• The effect is the event that happens as a result.
• Sometimes a cause has more than one effect, or an effect has more than one cause.
• Sometimes an effect can become the cause of another effect.
Practice Together
Connect Causes and Effects Read the passage aloud and identify the cause and effect. You should connect a cause with an effect.
The Cause-and-Effect Chain shows how one event is connected to another event. Reread the passage, and look for a second effect that is connected to the first effect. Add it to the chain.
Try It!
Make a Cause-and-Effect Chain Work with a partner to create another Cause-and-Effect Chain. Reread the first paragraph on page 212. Find an effect for this cause: “Many immigrants know little or no English when they come to the U.S.” Then find a second effect that results from the first effect. Complete the chain. Continue to find more causes and effects in the selection, and put them in a chain. Then take turns reading the chain with your partner.
