Define and Explain

The chant on page 265 defines and explains the lungs. How would you define and explain the brain or stomach in a chant?

Work with a group to write a chant about one of these body parts: brain, nose, knee, elbow, feet, heart, stomach, or arms. Make a list of interesting facts or uses for the body part. Use your list as you define and explain the body part in a chant. Share your chant with the class.

How to Define and Explain

  • 1. Define, or give the meaning of, the word or topic.

  • 2. Explain what it does or how it is used.

  • 3. Give details or examples of what it does.

This is my elbow, where my arm bones meet. It bends to wave at people as they walk down the street.

Use Possessive Nouns

When you define and explain something, you may need to use possessive nouns. Remember to use the apostrophe (’) correctly.
