A complete sentence has two parts: the subject and the predicate.
The dogs subject pull the sleds. predicate
The subject tells who or what you are talking about. The predicate tells what the subject does.
• Nouns can be the subject of a sentence.
EXAMPLE | The dogs subject pull the sleds. |
• Nouns can also be the object of an action verb. To find the object, turn the verb into a question like: “Dogs pull what?” Your answer is the object.
EXAMPLE | The dogs pull verb the sleds object. |
• Many English sentences follow this pattern: subject → verb → object.
EXAMPLE | Chris subject interviewed object mushers verb. |

2. The Iditarod trail crosses Alaska.
3. We have a trail, but it’s much shorter than the Iditarod.
4. Chase likes treats a lot.
