Use Pronouns in the Subject and Predicate

A noun can be the subject of a sentence or the object of a verb in the predicate.

A pronoun refers to a noun. Like a noun, it can also be the subject of a sentence or the object of a verb. Study the chart. Which pronouns are the same for subject and object?

Subject PronounsIyouhesheitweyouthey
Object Pronounsmeyouhimheritusyouthem
  • • Use a subject pronoun as the subject of a sentence.

EXAMPLESMisty is our cat. She likes milk.
The milk is fresh. It came from the store.
  • • Use an object pronoun as the object of the verb.

EXAMPLESMisty drinks the milk. She drinks it from a dish.

Remember, most English statements follow this pattern: subject → verb → object.

EXAMPLESMisty subject drinks verb milk. object She subject drinks verb it object every day.
