Vocabulary Study: Interpret Baseball Jargon

Every field of study or work uses familiar words in special ways. These words are called jargon. For example, what comes to mind when you hear the word diamond? If you were a jeweler, you’d picture one thing. If you were a baseball player, you’d picture another thing.

Use context clues to help you interpret the meaning of jargon.

  • 1. Look for words or phrases in the same sentence or paragraph that may be clues to the word’s meaning.

  • 2. Test the meaning in the sentence to see if it makes sense.

  • 3. If you still can’t figure out what the word means, check a dictionary.

Most biographies are organized by chronological order. Writers tell a sequence of events in a person’s life.

Make a Sequence Chain One way to clearly see the sequence of events in a person’s life is to make a Sequence Chain.
