1 TRY OUT LANGUAGE
2 LEARN GRAMMAR
3 APPLY ON YOUR OWN
The language you use and the way you speak will vary depending on your audience and your purpose. For example, use formal language for presentations and interviews. Use informal, or relaxed, language when you talk with family and friends.
With a partner, role-play how you would talk to a friend about setting up a school recycling program. Then role-play how you would talk to a teacher about setting it up. Trade roles.
Perform your role-plays for a small group. Let them decide if your language is appropriate for each situation.
Be sure to use the correct tense. If you know when in the past an event happened, use the past tense.
EXAMPLE | Last year, we talked about starting a recycling center. |
If you’re not sure when an event happened in the past or if the event is still happening now, use the present perfect tense.
EXAMPLES | Mom has volunteered to help start a recycling center. |
We have talked about starting a recycling program for a long time. |
