Language and Grammar: Use Appropriate Language

Act It Out With a partner, role-play a conversation telling a young family member how to plant a tree. Use information from page 608 to guide your directions. Then role-play as if you were giving a formal presentation to the class on how to plant a tree. Use language appropriate to the situation. Be sure to use verb tenses correctly. Trade roles.

Informal: Pick a good place for the tree. Think about how big it will grow.

Formal: Always choose an appropriate place to plant a tree. Ask for advice, if needed.

Writing and Grammar: Write About Actions

Study the Models When you write, make sure a reader can follow the action without getting confused. Remember that the wording will change depending on when the action happens.

Add Sentences Think of two sentences to add to the OK model. Think about when the action happened.

    Remember
  • • Use the past tense if you know when an action happened.

  • • Use the present perfect tense to tell about a past action that may still be going on.
