A technical manual explains how to do something or how something works. “Plant a Tree” on page 608 is an example of the kind of directions that can be found in a technical manual. It lists steps that tell how to plant a tree. Choose an environmental process and create a technical manual for it.
1 Choose Your Process With a partner, make a list of things you are interested in that are related to the environment. For example:
• how to fix a leaky faucet
• how to insulate a window
• how to recycle a printer ink cartridge
2 Research Steps in the Process Use books, magazines, or the Internet to find out what steps are involved in the process.
3 Make an Outline Write the steps in the order in which they happen. Organize the steps in groups, such as the beginning, the middle, and the end of the process.
4 Create Your Manual Using your outline as a guide, write the different sections of your technical manual. Use simple words and short sentences. Explain every step in the process. If you can, create visuals that illustrate each step.
See examples of technical manuals.
5 Share Your Manual Share your manual with your classmates. Ask them to rate how well you described your process. Would they be able to do what you’re describing? Ask them to share suggestions for improvement.
