Negotiate

When people negotiate, they try to reach an agreement. Usually they have to compromise. This means each person gives up a little of what he or she wants to reach an agreement that seems fair.

Work with a partner. Role-play a parent and teen negotiating an issue, such as going to the movies or having friends visit. Be sure to listen to the other person’s views and use polite, respectful language.

One important word in negotiations is but. When you use it, it means there is a certain condition to remember.

EXAMPLEYou can go to the movie, but you must be home for dinner.

Act out your negotiation for a small group of classmates. Talk about the compromise that was made. Then listen to another pair negotiate.

Use Participles as Adjectives

When you negotiate, you might need to use participles as adjectives to describe the people or things you are talking about.

EXAMPLESYour chatting group of friends need to be quieter.
Your tired parents need to get some sleep.
