Focus on Genre: Narrative Writing in Fiction and Nonfiction

Narrative writing tells a story. It can be fiction or nonfiction.

How It Works

When the story is made up, the narrative is fiction.

When the story is about real people and events, it is narrative nonfiction.

Whether fiction or nonfiction, a narrative is always told through someone’s eyes. This is its point of view, the position from which events are told.

In first-person point of view, the narrator, or person telling the story, tells only what he or she knows.

In third-person point of view, the narrator tells what others do, but is not part of the events.

When you read a narrative, pay attention to the signal words to help you identify the narrator’s point of view.
