If you see a word with a suffix or a compound word that you do not know, analyze the base word. To figure out the meaning of a word with a suffix, cover the part of the word that is not the base word. Here you see that protect is the base word.
protection = protect + ion
In a compound word, the connection of two base words makes a new word.
bird + house = birdhouse

Write a Description Use at least three of these words to write about your own home. Share your description with a partner.
How can you identify the actual size of a place? Measure its area. Area is length multiplied by width.
1 Practice Practice identifying area by measuring a sheet of paper.
2 Measure Measure the length of the paper with a ruler. Write down the number. Then, measure and note the width.
3 Multiply Multiply the two sides to identify the area. For example, 11 inches × 8 inches = 88 square inches.
