Esperanza had specific opinions about what makes a house a home. What specific things do you think make a house a home?

  • 1 Discuss Homes With a small group, discuss the question: What makes a house a home? As you state your opinion, make sure you support it with specific details. For example:

    • • An unsupported opinion: Furniture is good in a house.

    • • A supported opinion: I think a house is a home when it has a room with comfortable chairs and couches where family can gather.

As you tell your opinion about what you want in a home, use visuals as support as well. If you can easily sketch what you want, you probably have a good specific idea. If you can’t easily sketch it, like the unsupported opinion above, your idea is probably not specific enough.

After your discussion, list at least five things that your group chose as important features of a home.

  • 2 Collect Ideas Collect and cut out pictures of various homes and decorated rooms. Choose pictures that show the specific things your group wants in a home.

    • • Use the Internet to find pictures and take virtual tours of homes.

      Internet InsideNG.com
    • a blue dot Access a search engine. Use search words related to your specific topic.

  • 3 Organize Your Design Team Have each member of your team choose a task:

    • • Draw the outside of your home.

    • • Use graph paper to draw the floor plan of each room.

    • • Write a description of the special features that make the house a home.

  • 4 Share Your Design Present your drawings to the class. Have one person in the group describe the five features that are special about your home. Listen to each presentation. Then discuss the specific advantages of each team’s design.
