Literary Analysis: Analyze Text Structure: Cause and Effect

What Is Text Structure? Text structure is the way the writer organizes his or her ideas. A writer chooses the type of structure that shows the information in a clear way.

What Is a Cause-and-Effect Text Structure? A cause-and-effect text structure shows what happens and why. A cause is why something happens. An effect is what happens because of the cause. Often there are several causes and effects in one selection.

Practice Together

Analyze Cause and Effect The writer of “On the Menu” chose to use a cause-and-effect text structure to show information about animal adaptations. By analyzing the causes and effects, you can learn what animals do and why. For example, what happens when insects show off their bright colors or make a lot of foam? Work with your class to put the answer in a chart like this one.
